Six organisations; NIWA, Motu, Landcare Research/New Zealand Centre for Ecological Economics, Infometrics, AgResearch and GNS Science have formed a collaborative alliance – EcoClimate – to understand and model the economics of climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation for New Zealand.  This team brings together top-level experience in fields such as climatology, ecology, agriculture, and economics.

Our broad objective is to use modelling to better understand the implications of climate change for New Zealand’s environment and economy, and how adaptation and mitigation will be affected by different policies and institutions. This is a wider agenda than conventional modelling and will provide sound economic information for input into policy design.

We have been awarded funding from FRST to develop an integrated modelling framework that enables us to identify the costs and benefits of expected climate change on sectors of the economy, the costs and benefits of adaptation options, and the economic implications of emission mitigation options.  We also plan to draw on knowledge and modelling frameworks developed by other researchers and institutions, both in New Zealand and overseas.

We would welcome feedback on this research direction, its relevance to other organisations, and ways in which it could be targeted to meet wider community needs.
